Supporting learners to develop literacy, language and numeracy
skills within the context of their vocational learning.
The overall aim of this element of the programme is to promote
more effective learning and improve success rates by embedding
literacy, language and numeracy skills development into vocational
teaching and learning. Learners will understand why those skills
are relevant to them and develop and apply them in activities that
are interesting and engaging.

What are the benefits to my
organisation of accessing the programme?

Improvement in learner
results
In providers receiving support from SfLIP in
2007, this embedded approach to skills development increased the
retention and achievement of learners; early examples from external
evaluation flag up dropout falling from 30% to 19% in a work based
learning provider, achievement of qualifications increasing to 30%
higher than the national average in another. Recent research* also
provides evidence that vocational programmes that embed key skills
/ Skills for Life learning within them have:
Higher retention - 16% increase
Better success rates - 26% increase on Level 2 courses
Higher achievement of key skill / Skills for Life
qualifications:
-43% increase in literacy / language (92.8% of learners)
-23% increase in numeracy (93.4% of learners)
Learners who feel better prepared for work in the future

What is involved?
The support package
To maximise the impact of the support on
learners, staff and organisations, our package comprises four key

the support package.
